by Sumantra Roy
Welcome back!
Day 1 of the Search Engine Masters Course taught you how to
select the most effective keywords for your site. Day 2 taught
you how to create pages designed to get top rankings for these
keywords. Day 3 of the course taught you how to get an optimum
listing in the Open Directory. In Day 4, we covered how you can
get listed in the mother of all directories - Yahoo!. Today, in
the last day of this course, I will tell you how you can improve
the link popularity of your site which will help your site
improve your rankings in most of the spider based search engines.
By link popularity, I mean the number (and quality) of sites that
are linking to your site. This is the basis behind the PageRank
algorithm used by Google. Link popularity is by far one of the
most important factors involved in improving your rankings in the
search engines.
Before I discuss how you can improve the link popularity of your
site, let me talk a bit about how Google's PageRank algorithm
works.
Google assigns a PageRank value to each web page in its database.
This is a number between 0 and 10.
Higher the PageRank value of a page, better its link popularity
in Google.
How do you determine the PageRank of a particular page?
For this, you need to install the Google toolbar in your
computer. The toolbar is available at:
http://toolbar.google.com
Once you install the toolbar, you can determine the PageRank of a
page by taking your mouse pointer over the green bar present in
the toolbar - after a few moments, a box will pop up that will
show the PageRank of that page.
For instance, if the PageRank of a page is 5, the toolbar will
show the PageRank as 5/10.
So how does Google calculate the PageRank of a page?
The PageRank of a page depends on 2 factors:
i) The PageRank of the pages that link to this page.
ii) The number of links present in the pages that link to
this page.
The way Google's PageRank algorithm works is that other things
remaining the same, higher the PageRank of the pages that link to
a particular page, higher the PageRank of THAT page.
On the other hand, other things remaining the same, higher the
number of links present in the pages that link to a particular
page, LOWER the PageRank of THAT page.
What do I mean by the "number of links" present in a page?
This is the number of web pages that a particular page links to.
So, if a particular page (let's call it Page A) links to pages B,
C, D, E and F, then the number of links present in Page A is 5.
If all this sounds a bit too technical, don't worry.
You DON'T need to understand exactly how Google's PageRank
algorithm works.
All that you need to understand is this:
When you are trying to improve the link popularity of your
website, you need to obtain links from pages that have high
PageRank values and fewer links present in them.
That's ALL that you need to know.
Now, let's discuss how you can improve the link popularity and
PageRank of your own site.
The best way of improving the link popularity of your website is
to start a reciprocal linking campaign.
By reciprocal linking, I mean a process in which your website
links to another website and the other website links to your
website in return.
By doing this, both websites improve their link popularity.
Now, there are 2 ways of carrying out a reciprocal linking
campaign:
i) The hard way
ii) The easy way
The hard way is to do everything manually. Here are the steps
that you need to follow if you wanted to do reciprocal linking
the hard way:
i) You need to use the search engines to find sites related to
yours that are not direct competitors.
ii) You also need to find sites that link to your competitors.
iii) You need to visit these sites and see if they actually
exchange links and whether they have a good PageRank (since if
they don't have a good PageRank themselves, exchanging links with
them will not increase your link popularity).
iv) If you decide that you want to exchange links with a
particular site, you need to find out exactly how it wants you to
link to it from your site.
v) You then need to manually add a link to this site in your
site.
vi) Then, you need to find out the email address of the owner of
the website and send the owner a personalized email requesting
that he/she adds a link to your site in return.
vii) In many cases, you will not be able to locate the email
address of the owner simply because the owner has not published
any email address on the site. In that case, all the effort that
you had put into evaluating whether or not the site is suitable
for exchanging links will have been a waste of time.
viii) If you do manage to locate the email address, you need to
send a personalized and customized email to the website owner.
ix) You then need to wait and see whether this site is willing to
exchange links with you.
x) If the site is not willing to link to you, you need to remove
the link to the site from your site. Once again, all the effort
that you had put into evaluating the site, linking to it and
sending an email to the owner will have been a waste of time.
You have to repeat the same process all over again for the next
site that you want to exchange links with.
That was the hard way.
Now here's the easy way...
The easy way is to almost completely automate your entire
reciprocal linking campaign by using LinkExplore - by far the
most powerful and time-saving link popularity software on the
Internet.
LinkExplore helps you to execute your reciprocal linking campaign
in LESS than a fraction of the time that you would have to spend
if you were doing everything manually.
And unlike other link popularity programs, it helps you improve
your link popularity in a manner that is ethical and completely
within the guidelines laid down by Google and all the other major
search engines.
Today, we'll talk about the easy way of improving your link
popularity.
I am assuming that you already own a copy of LinkExplore. If you
don't, please go to the following URL and order your copy of
LinkExplore:
http://www.LinkExplore.com/t.php?1037_semc
Without a copy of LinkExplore, you will not be able to follow the
rest of today's course.
You should be able to download LinkExplore and have it installed
in your computer less than 5 minutes after you order it.
I'll wait for you to finish ordering, downloading and
installing LinkExplore...
....
....
Finished downloading and installing LinkExplore? Great.
Let's begin...
LinkExplore comes with a huge and constantly increasing database
of thousands of sites on the Internet that are willing to
exchange links with you.
If you were to manually try and locate these sites yourself, it
is highly unlikely that you'd ever be able to locate even a few
of them in the first place.
Even if you did, it could take months and hundreds of hours of
your time before you would be able to locate some of these sites
on your own.
When you use LinkExplore, you get access to these thousands of
sites instantly.
So, when you have LinkExplore with you, you don't need to spend
hours every day using the search engines to try and locate
websites in your industry that will be willing to exchange links
with you.
LinkExplore has already done this for you, thereby giving you
extra hours each day to spend on your business.
To start LinkExplore, double-click on the LinkExplore icon on
your computer's desktop, log in using your username and password,
and then click on the "Get Links" button in LinkExplore's Main
Menu.
LinkExplore will then display the Search for Links window that
will allow you to choose the categories of sites that you want to
exchange links with.
If you'd like to view a screenshot of this window, go to
http://www.LinkExplore.com/t.php?1037_semc
and click on the link that
allows you to take a 5 minute tour
of LinkExplore. Then, go to the second page in the tour.
Now, let's say that you have a site that provides insurance
quotes.
This means that you would want to exchange links with other
insurance sites and perhaps other sites in the financial services
sector.
So, in LinkExplore, you can choose the Money and Finance
category.
Now, LinkExplore not only comes with a database of thousands of
sites, but it will also automatically provide the PageRank of
each site to you, thereby saving you dozens of hours of your time
and ensuring that you don't need to waste your time trying to
figure out the PageRank of each site yourself by using the Google
toolbar.
There is NO other database on the Internet that does this.
There are dozens of sites in LinkExplore's database whose links
pages have a PageRank of 6, not to mention hundreds of sites
whose links pages have a PageRank of 5 or 4. And there are even a
few sites whose links pages have a PageRank of 7!
LinkExplore will also automatically provide the number of
outgoing links present in each page in its database. This again
saves you dozens of hours of your time and ensures that you don't
need to waste your time figuring out the number of outgoing links
present in the pages yourself.
Now, as I had mentioned earlier, you should always try to get
links from pages that have high PageRank values but only a few
outgoing links to other sites.
That way, you can maximize the link popularity and PageRank of
your own site.
So how do you locate sites that have high PageRank values but
only a few outgoing links to other sites?
Using LinkExplore of course
LinkExplore allows you to sort all the sites in the category that
you have selected according to the Descending Order of PageRank
and Ascending Order of the number of outgoing links.
This means that you will quickly and easily be able to locate
hundreds of sites that have high PageRank values and only a few
outgoing links to other sites.
Once these sites link to you, the link popularity of your site
will improve dramatically, which means that you are all but
guaranteed to get top 10 rankings in Google for your most
important keywords.
Coming back to the insurance site, once you have selected the
Money & Finance category and told LinkExplore to sort the sites
in this category according to the Descending Order of PageRank
and Ascending Order of the number of outgoing links, click on the
"Display Links" button.
LinkExplore will then display the List of Links window containing
all the sites in the Money & Finance category, sorted according
to the Descending order of the PageRank and Ascending order of
the number of outgoing Links.
This means that sites in the Money & Finance category which have
high PageRank values and only a few outgoing links to other sites
will be displayed right at the top.
A screenshot of the List of Links window is present in the 3rd
page in the 5 minute tour of LinkExplore.
You can now start selecting the sites with which you want to
exchange links. In order to select a site, you can click on the
check-box beside the site.
Since there are many more sites than what can be displayed in a
single screen, you can click on the "Next" and "Prev" buttons to
navigate the list of sites.
Now, in order to convince another website owner to link to your
site, you obviously need to first add a link to that website
owner's site from your site.
For this, you need to know how the other website owner wants you
to link to her site, i.e. you need to know what the other website
owner wants you to use as the link text and description of the
link to her site.
If you didn't have LinkExplore with you, you would have to
manually go to the other site and spend quite a few minutes
figuring out how you should link to the other site.
Since you would have to do this for each site you want to
exchange links with, you can imagine how much time you would have
spent doing this.
Luckily, LinkExplore has already found this information for you.
This means that you don't need to waste dozens of hours of your
time figuring out how the website owners you want to exchange
links with want you to link to their sites.
All that you need to do is to click on the "View More Details"
button in the List of Links window. LinkExplore will then display
the link text (also called the "Anchor Text") and description
that you should use for the link to the selected web site.
A screenshot of this window is present in the 3rd page in the 5
minute tour of LinkExplore.
Once you have selected all the sites with whom you want to
exchange links, you need to add a page in your site that contains
links to those sites.
If you didn't have LinkExplore with you, after spending dozens of
hours of your time figuring out how the other website owners want
you to link to their sites, you would have to waste a few more
hours manually adding all the links to your site.
Once again, LinkExplore does everything for you. Simply click on
the "Get Link Code" button in the List of Links window.
LinkExplore will then display the HTML source code that you need
to add to your site.
A screenshot of this window is again present in the 3rd page in
the 5 minute tour of LinkExplore.
You can click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button to copy the HTML
code to the clipboard, then go to the web designing tool that you
use (FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or any other tool or software) and
paste the code there and then upload the page to your site.
If you want to view what the HTML code will look like in your
browser, you can click on the "Preview Link Code" button in the
List of Links window. LinkExplore will then display the HTML code
exactly the way it would appear in a browser.
A screenshot of this window is again present in the 3rd page in
the 5 minute tour of LinkExplore.
Once you have added the page containing the links to your site,
you can then send an email to the other website owners asking
them to link back to your site. Simply click on the "Send Email"
button in the List of Links window.
LinkExplore will display the Send Email window which will allow
you to send emails to the website owners with whom you want to
exchange links.
A screenshot of this window is present in the 4th page in the 5
minute tour of LinkExplore.
If you didn't have LinkExplore with you, you would have to
manually go to each website and then spend a few minutes figuring
out the email address of the owner of the site.
Since you would have to do this for each site you want to
exchange links with, you can imagine how much time you would have
spent doing this.
Luckily, LinkExplore has already found out the email address of
the owner of each of the sites in its database, once again saving
you quite a few hours of your time.
LinkExplore comes with 5 professionally created templates for
different types of link request emails that have been tested and
proven to generate a high response every time they are used to
request a link exchange.
In order to use a template, simply select that template from the
Select Template drop-down list. The content of the Subject and
Body fields will be replaced by the content of the template.
Of course, you can customize each template according to your own
requirements.
LinkExplore also supports several mail-merge fields which it
automatically replaces by the relevant values when it sends
emails on your behalf.
This allows you to quickly send personalized emails to each
website owner without having to manually type the entire email
for each website owner.
Once again, this feature will save you dozens of hours of your
time.
After you have created the email, you can click on the "Send
Email" button to send the email to the website owners with whom
you want to exchange links.
When the website owners link back to you, your link popularity
will improve dramatically and you will most certainly get top 10
rankings in Google, Yahoo and the other search engines for your
most important keywords.
That's all it takes to improve your link popularity when you use
LinkExplore!
