HTTP uptime specifies in percentages how frequently your website is accessible to users on the Internet, while network uptime refers to how often your network is up and running. For example, if your website is available 99.9 percent of the time each month, your host is providing 99.9 percent http uptime.

Some web hosts back up their uptime promises with service level guarantees (SLAs) and escalating refunds for increasingly large amounts of downtime. Without an effective SLA to back it up, an uptime guarantee doesn’t always carry much weight; in fact, some web hosts choose not to make uptime guarantees, arguing that they are more of a marketing strategy than an actual reflection of performance.

When it refers to http, rather than to networks, uptime specifies in percentages how frequently your website is accessible to users on the Internet.

For example, if your site is available 99.9 percent of the time each month, your host is providing 99.9 percent uptime. Your downtime (the length of time when your site is not accessible) in that instance would be about 43.2 minutes a month (30 days a month x 24 hours a day x 60 minutes a day = 43,200 total minutes; 43,200 x 99.9 percent = 43,145.8 minutes of uptime; 43,200 total minutes - 43,145.8 minutes of uptime = 43.2 minutes of downtime).

Some web hosts provide service level guarantees (SLAs) that specify how much uptime they promise to deliver, as well as whether they provide refunds for failure to meet their uptime guarantees. Read these SLAs carefully to make sure you can actually verify poor performance and collect refunds if and when necessary.
