On June 24, MYNIC (Malaysian Network Information Centre), the ‘.my’ country code TLD manager, closed a month-long public consultation period on its proposal to re-open registration of second-level ‘.my’ domain names (2LDs).
MYNIC is considering reintroducing 2LDs (e.g. xyz.my) for two reasons. First, this would provide more choices to the public for registering ‘.my’ domain names. Second, the proposed 2LDs would respond to increasing local demand.
Currently, only third-level domain names (e.g. xyz.com.my) can be registered under ‘.my’. This trend started in Malaysia in the late 1990’s as domain began categorizing into activity segments; mainly commercial, governmental, and educational. This trend toward 3LDs such as ‘.com.my’, ‘.gov.my’ and ‘.edu.my’ led to the termination of registrations for 2LDs.
MYNIC is pondering a 2-phase re-launch of the ‘.my’ 2LDs. The first phase would consist of a two-month pre-registration period permitting existing owners of 3LDs to register equivalent 2LDs. Next, the second phase would open 2LD registrations to all Malaysian organizations and individuals. _________________ HostOnNet.com - Reseller Hosting
